So I was asked to make a cute little Smaug, which is awesome because I absolutely love The Hobbit! He doesn't have much of a description in the book except that he is a big red-gold dragon. I actually gave his red body a light dusting of gold powder so he has a slight gold sheen to him. It doesn't show up too well in the pictures though.
Now, that treasure... Holy crap was it fun to work on! I dragged my husband to the local bead shop with me and we went on a quest for tiny treasure. The items are charms, clipped of there loops, and the "gold" is actually seed beads. They were the perfect size and shape for gold at this size. Of course the one issue with seed beads is the gaping hole in them. So what I ended up doing was placing just about every one of those beads by hand with tiny tweezers.
The treasure took longer than the dragon! Each bead had to be placed on end so you didn't see the hole. They were embedded into a mound of gold clay, and built up around the dragon. There are just a couple showing the hole that I missed, but you really don't notice them considering he is only 2 inches tall.
Now I know Smaug is gigantic in the book, so we're gonna pretend he's very young Smaug, just beginning his massive gold hoard
