Adult Magma Dragon - Magmax

He is finally done! I think I can safely say this dragon has taken me longer than any to date. I officially lost track of time spent on him after about the 30 hour mark, but I'd guess around 40+. There were just soooo many little details and things to figure out... cutting out every single rock, making them all fit together but not look too uniform, and texturing every single one by hand. Oh man. I'm just so proud of him. Really took me in a whole new direction both technique and design wise. He's SO different from my usual dragons. He's also bigger, over 4 inches! May not sound like a lot, but when you work as small as I do, it's huge

He is made completely from colored clay, not a drop of paint. And I think that made it even more satisfying. I rarely work with skinner blends (the color gradiation) so making sheets long enough to cover his body, and meet up and blend together perfectly was quite the challenge. The colored clay is just so vibrant and magma-y. He really is this bright in person!

I admit I wandered a bit from his original concept art: dragonsandbeasties.deviantart.… but in the best way. He just wasn't gnarly enough. So I just kept adding more and more spikes until I was happy. I guess as a Magma dragon grows they get ridiculous amounts of spikes, cuz his little brother, Magmini, has many to acquire still


Oh man I have been so excited to show you guys. And now baby Ember can come anytime because my Magma dragons are done. They were just such fun (and sometimes frustrating lol) dragons to figure out, I would have been super bugged if I had to put them off til baby allows me to work again.
